On November 3, Guangfo Metro marked its 10th anniversary. Over the past decade, this landmark project of the co-urbanization of Guangzhou and Foshan has made the “dual-city life” common for many citizens as a “golden corridor” between the two cities.
On November 3, 2010, Guangfo Metro was put into operation, linking the central urban areas of Guangzhou and Foshan. On December 28, 2018, the Yangang-Lijiao section was opened to traffic, marking the full operation of Guangfo Metro, which means that it only takes less than an hour to travel between Guangzhou and Foshan.
Since the operation, Guangfo Metro, with a punctuality rate of more than 99.98%, has maintained a high level of operation in the past ten years, carrying a total of 760 million passengers and a current average daily passenger flow of 528,000.
During the past ten years, Guangfo Metro has generated huge economic benefits for the business circles along the metro line following the opening of a number of large-scale commercial and residential complex. Nowadays, Wanda Plaza, TeeMall and other large-scale commercial complex have opened near the Financial High-tech Zone Station, while the business circles around the Guilan Road and the Ancestral Hall are also developing prosperously.

Guangfo Metro has not only transformed the way people travel, but also accelerated the element flow between the two cities, cultivating great changes in urban function and industrial models of the areas along the metro line. Chancheng, Nanhai and Shunde, three districts of Foshan, are connected by the Metro, which has promoted the new pattern of urban development and facilitated the integration and win-win cooperation among various groups and industries in Foshan.
At present, the Foshan Metro Line 2 has entered the operation stage, which is expected to open for trial operation by the end of next year. Eight shield-structure sections in the west extension of Shunde section of the Guangzhou Metro Line 7 have been completed, which is expected to be put into trial operation in July next year.
This year, the National Development and Reform Commission has clearly proposed to create the “Great Bay Area on Track”. At present, Guangzhou and Foshan are planning to build the “1+4” Guangzhou-Foshan High-quality Development Integration Pilot Zone, promoting the comprehensive interconnection and in-depth integration in various fields, and gradually achieving the whole co-urbanization of Guangzhou and Foshan. Under the background of the construction of the Great Bay Area, the future of the co-urbanization developed by a subway is of great expectation.
