The Spring Festival is the grandest and the most distinctive traditional festival in Chinese. But different regions have their own custom features. Do you want to know about the special customs in Foshan? Lets learn it together!
On the first day of the Lunar year, families begin to give a salute to celebrate the New Year after they finished the breakfast. The younger generation will congratulate the older generation, then people of the same generation will salute each other with a bow. Usually people say some lucky words during the salute, later the older will give a red packet to the younger. After that, they will go outdoors to visit their relatives, from their intimate families to social friends, bringing their home-made food fried"Jiandui", "fried jiaozai" and fruits as greeting gifts.
According to the old customs, people can not wash their hair on the first Lunar New Year day because it may wash off the fortune. The second day is the opening day of this year, people cant kill animals until this day. The third day is Chikou (an evil spirit), people have better not visit their relatives on this day because they may easily bring troubles on themselves. Besides, people cant buy shoes during the Spring Festival, as the the word "shoe" in Cantonese sounds like a sigh. It is more impractical to buy books because the "book" in Cantonese sounds like "输" (lose), so this unlucky word is a taboo for the beginning of a new year. Chinese people used to talk with lucky words but not some discouraging words during banquets. If somebody breaks bowls or plates carelessly, people usually say" every year would be well. (the word "year" here sounds like Chinese word "碎" (broken), or people may say" a broken bowl or plate is like a opened flowers, indicating a great fortune in the coming year."
