The Legend of Bijiang Village

According to history, Bijiang was originated from Han Dynasty and set up at a large scale at the beginning of South Song Dynasty since more than 800 years ago. Bijiang then became a part of Shunde since 1452.

According to the book Records of Shunde in the period of Emperor Xianfeng in Qing Dynasty, people in Bijiang lived with the waters and the commercewas already prosperous. In the middle of Qing Dynasty, Bijiang had already developed as an above-scale handicrafts paper making base. At the end of Qing Dynasty, Bijiang had become a significant grain processing and transferring center in the Pearl River Delta.

A love story behind Jin House

Jin House (Jin means gold in Chinese) is the most famous ancient architecture in Bijiang Village, because there is a romantic love story behind Jin House.

It is said that Empress Dowager Cixi’s god daughter, Dai Peiqiong got married with Su Boyun (the great grandson of an officer with high rank). Su settled Dai in Jin House and spent every romantic night there.

Civilized talents in Bijiang Village

According to statistic, at least 26 Jinshi (进士, a successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations) and 145 Juren (举人, a successful candidate in the imperial examinations at the provincial level) since Song Dynasty came from Bijiang Village.

 

 

 

Ancient architecture in Bijiang Village
At the beginning of the twentieth century, there were over 120 ancestral halls in various families in Bijiang. Nowadays there are more than 300 ancient dwellings since Ming and Qing Dynasty and over 30 ancestral halls, covering an area of about 120,000 square meters. When wandering on the Cunxin Street and Taixing Street in Bijiang, visitors can find ancient ancestral halls and ancient houses on both sides. Only 30% of the whole ancient architecture cluster are well-kept till now, which still impresses visitors.

The ancient architecture here still remains the Lingnan characteristics such as rammed-earth house, oyster shell wall, terrazzo tile and wok-eared shaped wall. Besides, there are also various decoration like wood carving, tile carving, stone carving, grey model and wall painting, which can be called as the folk architecture museum of Ming and Qing Dynasty.

 

In recent years, villagers in Bijiang started to realize the value of the ancient cultural resources. Under the strong support in many ways, Bijiang invested more than 10 million yuan ($1.45 million) in buildng the the ancient architecture cluster tourism zone of BijiangJin House.
