Guangdong Provincial Writers’ Association has carried out a project to support the creation of three specific themes of literature, namely, Cantonese chef, Guangdong technician and housekeeper in south Guangdong in order to build a major cultural province. Foshan writer Sheng Hui’s Cantonese Cuisine, which shows the unique beauty of the cuisine in a literary way and displays the charm of the Greater Bay Area, was on the list of the project. Another three works selected are also novels and reportages.

As a "celebrity" of Chinese food culture, Cantonese cuisine is one of the four major cuisines in the Qing Dynasty, along with Lu, Su and Sichuan cuisine. Now it ranks high among the eight cuisines in China and enjoys an international reputation. So far, nine cities around the world have been named City of Gastronomy, of which six are in China, and two are in the Cantonese cuisine family, one in Shunde District, Foshan, and the other in the Macau Special Administrative Region.

With about 170,000 words, Cantonese Cuisine introduces famous Cantonese dishes, explores the cultural connotation of them, tells the story behind them and traces their history through in-depth dialogues with Cantonese chefs, promoting the cultural construction in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and striving itself to become a classic reading book of Cantonese cuisine.
