On 24th January, a video went viral on the Internet, in which a Foshan police mediated disputes caused by a foreign couple’s unfamiliar with local traffic rules in fluent English.

On the morning of 18th January, two electric bicycles collided in Yundonghai Street. Because of the accident, the two sides argued, and later some passers-by called the police for help. Police Lai Junjie received the report and immediately went to the scene.

“When I arrived, one side kept blaming the other for jaywalking and asked for an apology. But the other side was a foreign couple who can not understand the language at all.” Lai said. So Lai communicated with the couple in English to know more about the accident.

On that day, the foreign couple went across the intersection without noticing transverse traffic and the traffic light, as they thought that they could go straight in the bicycle lane, resulting in the accident.

“When I talk with them, I noticed that they misunderstood some traffic rules. Thus, I explained related rules and laws in English to them.” Lai said.

The accident didnt cause much damage and finally both sides reached a settlement.

With Lais fluent English, the accident was settled properly, as Lai has great interest in English from an early age. Even now, he still keeps reading English materials and watching English shows to improve his language skills. "I feel so happy to help people solve their problems and hope I can apply my knowledge in serving the society." Lai said.
