Hanfu fans in parade: its more than a hobby

On February 12, a group of youth, wearing hanfu, a tradition Chinese clothing, showed up in Zhushande Hall in Daliang Town, Shunde District with lanterns to celebrate the Lantern Festival in advance. At 7 p.m., they held a parade along the Gegang Street.

There are around 800 Hanfu lovers in Shunde, most of which are in their 20s or 30s. They are locals or new comers from all walks of life. These hanfu enthusiasts often discuss the styles and history of traditional clothing online. Sometimes they gather offline to share wearing, accessories and make-ups.

These Hanfu lovers fell in love with the clothing out of different reasons. Xiaofei from Shunde District was fond of the generals who served at the border since he was a child. He even made paper armor himself. He was also fond of the culture, weapons and other costumes from the past.  “Ive been busy working so I tabled my dream after I grew up”, said the young man. “One day, however, I saw a video of a girl wearing Hanfu on a show and I thought that was beautiful. That’s when I decided to buy Hanfu and armors.”

Xiaofei bought his first traditional clothing at the end of 2019. “Most of my friends think it looks great. My family also supports me”, Xiaofei said proudly. “I bought my first armor last April to fulfill my childhood dream.”

Xiaofei is disappointed when people mistake Hanfu as cosplay costumes or even clothing of Japan, Korea or Mongolia. For him, “our generation should make contributions to the succession and promotion of traditional culture, to which Hanfu belongs.”
