On June 13, the Huangqi Dragon Boat Festival commenced with great enthusiasm on the river in front of the Huangqi Dragon Mother Temple. The event attracted 25 dragon boat teams from Guangzhou and Foshan, including prominent teams from Tianhe Liede, Guangzhou Baiyun Hengsha, Lishui Shachong, Dongxiu Julong, and Hengjiang Village. The festival drew large crowds from surrounding areas, creating an atmosphere of excitement.
With the firing of the starting gun, the dragon boats surged forward amid the sounds of cheering, paddling, and drumming. The competition featured two categories: the mixed wood group with 18 teams and the fir wood group with 7 teams. Zhonglian Dragon Boat Team won first place in the mixed wood group, while Shaxi clinched the top spot in the fir wood group.
The tradition of dragon boat racing in Huangqi dates back to the Qing Dynasty's Daoguang period, and it has become a significant cultural event in the region. The festival not only showcases modern dragon boat racing but also celebrates the rich cultural heritage of traditional dragon boat competitions. This year's event also featured participation from the Nanhai Lishui Dragon Boat Team, enhancing cultural exchange between Dali Town and neighboring areas.
Earlier in the day, Dali Town held a ceremony to celebrate the birthday of the Dragon Mother, further establishing its cultural significance in the region. The Dragon Boat Festival season in Dali includes over 20 events, such as the Yanbu Old Dragon Awakening Ceremony and the Ligui Cup Dragon Boat Race, bringing new vitality to traditional customs.
