From June 14 to 16, the 21st Universe Multicultural Film Festival took place in Los Angeles, USA. The film The Legend of the White Snake, produced by Foshan Cantonese Opera Theatre, has distinguished itself among many entries, winning the Best Musical Feature Film award. This marks the first time a Cantonese opera film has won at this prestigious festival.
The Universe Multicultural Film Festival is the only international film festival within the Oscar Alliance and the International Film Festival Alliance dedicated to ethnic films. It has successfully hosted 21 editions, each attracting thousands of entries from over 40 countries. For the 21st edition, 352 ethnic films from around the world were submitted by the end of 2023.
Director Yin Dawei represented Foshan Cantonese Opera Theatre at the festival in Los Angeles, where he was interviewed by Meiya International TV and other media outlets to introduce the film to a global audience. The film was also featured as the opening screening of the festival, receiving enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Notably, The Legend of the White Snake has garnered international acclaim beyond this recent award. Last year, the film earned several accolades at the Hong Kong Bauhinia International Film Festival, including the Best Actress won by Actress Li Shuqin, Best Cinematography, and Best Art Direction. Additionally, actor Law Kar-ying was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
