Guangzhou, Guangdong province, aims to evolve into a smart, fashionable and modern international consumption center in a few years to extend its charm as a millennium commercial city.

The vision is outlined in a plan for the 2022-25 period that was posted on the city government's website on Wednesday.

A consumption service belt will be developed along the Pearl River, running through the city. Cultural and tourism zones will be strengthened in both the central city and coastal Nansha district.

Five landmark commerce clusters will be enhanced — areas of Tianhe Road-Zhujiang New Town, Chimelong resort-Wanbo business cluster, Baietan riverside, Canton Tower-Pazhou business cluster and Guangzhou international financial town-Huangpu business cluster.

The city will develop a consumption chain based on its sizable industrial sectors of garments/accessories, cosmetics, jewelry, suitcases/bags and automobiles. It will attract more international conferences as part of the effort to step up consumption.

The city government will support the establishment of duty-free shops at Guangzhou East Railway Station and the Nansha international cruise terminal.

It will also give greater play to its position as a national comprehensive transport hub to facilitate hub-related consumption by means such as boosting the interconnection of inter-city railways with the subway network.
