Chinese yuan strengthens in April

Chinese yuan strengthened against a basket of currencies in April, data from the China Foreign Exchange Trade System (CFETS) showed.


At the end of April, the CFETS yuan exchange rate composite index, which measures the yuan's strength relative to a basket of currencies, went up 0.65 percent from the end of March to 100.43, according to the system.


The index compares the yuan's value with that of 24 currencies, including the U.S. dollar, the euro, and the Japanese yen.


By the end of April, the index measuring the yuan against the Bank for International Settlements currency basket rose 0.9 percent from the end of March to 106.04.


The figure measuring the yuan against the Special Drawing Rights basket also climbed 0.36 percent from the previous month to 94.77, the data showed.
