
If you want to have a taste of Lingnan culture, you should join Foshan people in celebrating the Lantern Festival. Crossing Tongji Bridge(行通济) on the Lantern Festival is undoubtedly a big New Year event for Foshan people. On the night of the Lantern Festival, hundreds of thousands of people will come to Tongji Bridge(通济桥) in Chancheng District to celebrate. Everyone will take a small windmill and a head of lettuce walking through Tongji Bridge while whispering “Cross Tongji Bridge, trouble go away(行通济,无闭翳)” to pray for luck.
This folk custom dates back to Ming Dynasty. On this festival, various folk activities will be held all around Foshan. The Lantern Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the first Chinese lunar month, and traditionally ends the Chinese New Year period. In 2017 it falls on February 11.
Location: Ancestral Temple(祖庙)
Folk activities, including prayer and guessing lantern riddles, will be held in Ancestral Temple on February 11. Tourists can visit Ancestral Temple and Liang Garden(梁园), cross Tongji Bridge and experience Lingnan culinary culture in Foshan Lingnan Tiandi(岭南天地).
Location: Fengjian, the Water Village (逢简水乡)
A Lantern Festival performance will be held in Culture Plaza(文化广场) of Fengjian Village at 7:30 PM on February 11. Audience can enjoy folk songs and dances, of which some are on the list of the intangible cultural heritage.

Location: Xiqiao Mountain(西樵山)
Folk activities in Xiqiao Mountain in Nanhai Distirct, such as guessing lantern riddles, New Year prayer and firework show, attract thousands of people every year.
Location: Chuanlord Manor(长鹿休博园)
A large lantern show will be held in Chuanlord Manor in Shunde District on the Lantern Festival, where people can watch lanterns, guess lantern riddles and taste “the world’s biggest Tangyuan(汤圆)”.
