Fish sieve weaving technique backs up fishery in Jiujiang Nanhai

In Jiujiang Town, Nanhai District, there is a special fish sieve, covered with "holes". Just toss the sieve in the water, and fishermen are able to sort out up to 30 species of fish. Thats to say, they can literally tell how much the fish would sell with just one look at the fish screened on the sieve.

The weaving technique has a history of more than 200 years in Jiujiang, which dates back as early as in the Qing Dynasty. Jiujiang has since topped any other places in China, as of its weaving technique.

When hot summer ends and autumn arrives, it is the best time for fish sieve weaving, when the climate gets cool and dry.

In Shangxixi Mountain Village, Zhang Huacheng, a traditional weaver with more than 40 years of experience, is preparing bamboo for a new round of production. As he said, weaving a fish sieve requires 8 processes, including opening the bamboo, chopping the bamboo, tying the ring, pulling the bamboo, weaving the sieve, sifting, closing the sieve, and finally stamping. The whole process takes 3 hours.

Thanks to the technique, it has become a lot easier for fishermen to fish and sort out the fish from the water.
