From May 29-30, representatives from the consulates of Greece, Turkey, Poland, Germany, and other nations based in Guangzhou gathered in Foshan for the fifth annual "Foshan Intangible Cultural Heritage Experience and Exchanges" event. They immersed themselves in the city's rich tradition and cultural heritage through hands-on activities such as ceramics making, dragon boat racing, Foshan lion dance performances, and Shifan (Ten Tunes) music. This event provided a comprehensive glimpse into Foshan's profound cultural and historical tapestry.

Experiencing the Charm of Ceramics

The event commenced on May 29 at the Wei Hua Art Museum in Chancheng District. Wu Huiying, Director of the Foshan Foreign Affairs Bureau, introduced the city's economic prowess and cultural depth, inviting guests to discover Foshan's unique blend of tradition and innovation. She emphasized the potential for cultural exchanges to drive collaboration in trade, technology, and education.

Guided by the gallery's curator, attendees explored the intricacies of modern Foshan ceramics, creating their own artworks using various techniques such as molding, sculpting, and pressing. The hands-on session highlighted the city's rich artistic heritage and innovative spirit.

In the afternoon, the delegation toured the historic Nanfeng Ancient Kiln, absorbing the deep cultural significance of Foshan's ceramics. Turkish Consul General in Guangzhou, Kaan Baskurt, remarked on the cultural parallels between Foshan's ceramics and Turkey's Iznik pottery, both recognized by UNESCO. He noted the substantial potential for collaborative efforts in cultural heritage preservation and exchange.

Exploring Tradition in Chaji Village

On May 30, the delegation visited Chaji Village in Nanhai District, where they experienced traditional performances of Foshan Shifan (Ten Tunes) music and the iconic lion dance. The engaging presentations by local heritage practitioners captivated the guests, who enthusiastically learned basic performance techniques. These interactive sessions breathed new life into the intangible cultural heritage, fostering deeper cultural understanding.

Exploring the village's winding paths, they admired the meticulously restored historical buildings, which narrate the rich history and achievements of Chaji Village in creating a harmonious and vibrant community.

The rhythmic drumbeats and enthusiastic shouts heralded the arrival of dragon boats in Shengtang Village. The consuls eagerly participated in the dynamic dragon boat racing, experiencing the vibrant and spirited tradition firsthand.

Promoting Cultural Exchange

Polish Consul General in Guangzhou, Piotr Nowotniak, who has participated in the event for two consecutive years, emphasized the importance of cultural exchange in fostering mutual understanding and respect. He warmly invited Foshan residents to explore Poland's rich cultural heritage, promising a welcoming and enriching experience.

The final event will take place on June 8, inviting representatives from various consulates based in Guangzhou. This closing event aims to further promote cultural and multi-field exchanges, enhancing Foshan's reputation as a hub of Lingnan culture and sharing its unique cultural narratives with the world.
